Hansbrough pledges to Sun Devils

Posted Jul 30, 2011

Prior to his Tempe visit is seemed to be a forgone conclusion that Russell Hansbrough would commit to ASU today, and true to the script the Arlington (Tex.) running back made the call.

“The unofficial visit was more than I expected,” said the 5-8 185 pound Russell Hansbrough. “It’s a great campus, the coaches showed me a lot of love and I just liked everything about it. Everything that my father and I saw there we liked.”

The Bowie High School running back was being recruited by Arizona State defensive line coach Scott Brown, yet naturally he had phone conversations prior to his Tempe visit with his future position coach Bryce Erickson.

“Everything he told me on the phone about the school was exactly like I saw it on the visit,” Hansbrough stated. “This is the first time I met him in person and he is a really cool guy. I just talked to him a few times until now but I know I’m going to talk to him a lot from now on.”

As a junior Hansbrough collected 950 yards rushing on 130 carries, as well as five TD's. He also had 20 catches for 200 yards. He reported a 40-time of 4.46 seconds. In 2010 he missed three games due to a concussion but said that he cleared for his senior year.

“My high school’s offense and their (ASU’s) offense are really the same,” Hansbrough explained. “So there won’t be a lot of things for me to change. Coach Bryce told me that the main thing he likes about me is that I’m a downhill runner. I don’t make a lot of moves and I am just a straight forward running back.

“I’m just coming here being a factor on the field and that’s what I’m planning to do.”

Hansbrough had also offers from Auburn, BYU, TCU, Missouri and several other schools. Yet for a couple of months now the running back hasn’t hid affinity to the maroon and gold and just six days ago he commented that he could see himself pledging to the maroon and gold while on his visit.

“This visit surpassed my expectations,” Hansbrough admitted. “I thought it was just going to be a nice campus, but it ended up being a great campus.”
