Griffey talks ASU visit

This past weekend marked the first time Trey Griffey visited the Arizona State campus, and the Orlando Dr. Phillips High School athlete shared his impressions of that trip with Devils Digest.

"It was a good visit," said Griffey. "I was hosted by Michael Eubank and my favorite part of the trip was hanging out with him and the rest of the team. All the players told me how much they liked it here and said that even if you don't know anybody when you get first get here that once you get to know all the players everything is real cool.

"I enjoyed visiting with the coaches and because they haven't been at the school for that long we both were saying how beautiful everything was."

The 6-2 185-pound Trey Griffey has played both safety and wide receiver for the 10-2 Panthers, and said that Arizona State is recruiting him as athlete. As a senior he collected 72 catches for 970 yards, setting school records in both categories, as well as scoring 11 touchdowns for Dr. Phillips High school.

Griffey, who reportedly runs the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds, also played in the Under Armour All-American bowl earlier this month and caught two balls for 31 yards in that contest.

"The (ASU) coaches said that liked my character and ball skills," Griffey stated. "I don't care which side of the ball I get to play on. I can get up the field pretty fast and can score. I don't know if there is one particular thing I need to work on, I want to improve everything about my game."

Trey is the son of future baseball Hall of famer Ken Griffey Jr., yet he stated that he hasn't played baseball for seven years and therefore playing that sport in any of the colleges that are pursuing him has never come up, nor does he have a desire to take that route at the next level.

ASU offered Griffey' prior to his official visit, which marked his first official visit to any of his suitors. He is planning to fill the last two weekends in January with additional official trips

"I have an offer from Iowa State and I will visit them next week," Griffey remarked. "The week after that I'm deciding between Middle Tennessee State, LSU and Florida…Middle Tennessee State has offered me a scholarship.

"I don't know when I will make my decision. I know I do want to go to a school with good academics." Recommended Stories
