Barnes talks ASU visit

Coaching changes at several schools have delayed the recruitment process for Reggie Barnes, who may or may not fax his Letter of Intent on signing day. The recruiting picture for the Tampa Berkeley Prep linebacker started to take shape with his first official visit, which happened to be to Arizona State last weekend.

"It went well and was really nice," Barnes said of his Arizona State visit. "This was my first time at the school and I got to check out all the facilities and the campus which was really nice. The Honors College is located right in the middle of campus which is very nice. Their Honors College is number one in the nation among public universities and if I went there that is something I would consider going into.

"Will Sutton hosted me on the visit and I had fun hanging out with all the players. He told me that the team has a lot of good players and that now they have the perfect coaching staff to help them get to the next level. The coaches made a very good impression on me and they are just a great group of guys."

Barnes stated that he had been recruited by a member of Todd Graham's staff when they were at Pittsburgh, and these days while being pursued by Arizona State he is being recruited by defensive line coach Paul Randolph.

"I have a good relationship with him and I talk to him weekly," Barnes stated. "He's a high intensity guy that seems like a players' coach and that is the type of coach I want to play for."

The 6-2 200-pound Reggie Barnes is being recruited as an outside linebacker and he talked about his potential role in ASU's 3-4 defense.

"They want me to play the ‘Devil' backer which is more of a pass rusher," Barnes described. "The coaches like my speed and the way I come off the ball and my natural pass rushing abilities."

Aside from the Sun Devils, Barnes has scholarship offers from Air Force, Florida International, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Pittsburgh, Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth. His trip to Tempe this past weekend marked his first official visit to any of his suitors.

"There were a lot of coaching changes by the schools that were recruiting me," explained Barnes, "which is why I haven't taken any visits until last week. I'm going to visit Air Force this weekend and if I feel I need to I may take some other visits, probably to Florida International. But I could also make my decision before signing day.

"Right now I like Arizona State the most because that's the only school I visited, but I have nothing to compare it to. I want to take my time and look at all my possibilities before making a decision."

Aside from academics Barnes listed other factors he would consider before making a decision.

"I want to go a place where I can really fit in with the people and the environment," Barnes commented. "Just go to a good program where I can see myself being a part of for the next four years."
