The 6-5 240-pound Nick Begg visited twice ASU during the spring, and the impression the Sun Devils have made on him has been a very strong one. “I like the school a lot and I’m very interested in the program,” Begg said. “I like everything that Coach Todd Graham stands for, and I really like all the coaches there. I also like the fast tempo they play at and it looks like a fun environment to play in.
“The philosophy of Coach Graham is probably the thing that stands out the most to me about the program. I like his old school style, everything is ‘Yes Sir, No Sir.’, showing respect, being a man of faith…just everything he stands for.”
Begg played solely on defense last year for the 13-2 Eagles, but during the recruiting process the Sun Devils have conveyed to him that they like both at defensive end and tight end.
“Their defensive line plays hard and aggressive,” Begg described, “and I like what they do with the three-back which is different than your regular tight end because he motions around a lot. He needs to be very versatile and be able block in the backfield, as well as well block at the line of scrimmage and catch the ball.
“I like both positions and I don’t have a preference . I’ll play wherever the team needs me to play at. The (ASU) defensive line coach liked my quick feet and just the way I play in general. On offense they also like my quick feet, my good hands, and also my get off.”
San Diego State has been in close contact with Begg, and UCLA has been showing some interest. The defensive lineman doesn’t hold any offers at this point, but does feel that his first offer could arrive from Tempe.
“When I talk to the Arizona State coaches they said that are close to offering me,” Begg commented. “Coach Connelly said that he was going to come to my high school to watch my spring practice, so maybe after that I will get an offer. I know they have some camps coming up in the summer and if it doesn’t conflict with my football schedule I could come to one of those.”
Begg isn’t sure as to when he will commit to the college of his choice, but he does know what factors will affect his decision.
“I’m definitely going to look at the coaches and how they run their program,” Begg said. “I’m also going to give a lot of consideration to academics, the environment and the social life of the school….just the overall feel I get from the campus.”
