Lewis talks ASU pledge

Todd Graham’s staff has already shown that it will venture into the deep south during its recruiting efforts and today they received another pledge from a recruit in that region, in wide receiver Ronald Lewis from West Jefferson High School in Harvey, Louisiana. Devils Digest talked to the newest member of the 2013 class about his decision as well as with his Head Coach Marcus Scott.

Arizona State was really reaching out to me the most,” Lewis said. “I know I need to think about my future. I haven’t been there yet but I know how great of a school it is. I’m planning to take an official visit this year, but I don’t have an exact date.

“(ASU Offensive Coordinator) Coach Norvell and Coach Porter have been recruiting me for a while. Coach Norvell likes how explosive I am and he said that I always make plays when I have the ball in my hands.”

Scott described the 6-0 185-pound Ronald Lewis as versatile athlete that can be effective no matter where he is lines up on the field.

“He can play any of the skill positions,” Scott commented. “He can also play on defense, but in my mind he is better on offense. He is also a very good kick returner. Arizona State wants to use him like they used Damaris Johnson at Tulsa. They will pass to him, they will hand it off…just put the ball in his hands.

“He’s basically a mismatch in the slot. He’s too fast (a reported 40-time of 4.45 seconds) for linebackers and safeties and can make people miss, but big enough to take a hit on the inside (routes). He basically runs with it like a running back once he has the ball.”

The West Jefferson head Coach also cited Lewis’ longtime relationship with the Sun Devil staff as a significant reason why his player made the call this afternoon.

“Coach Porter, when he was at LSU, has known him since he was a freshman,” Scott noted, “and Coach Norvell recruited him when he was at Tulsa and he recruited other players from our schools. So both of them have known Ronald for a few years now.”

Due to Hurricane Isaac many schools in that region, including West Jefferson, have yet to play a game but their season does commence this Friday.

“We’ve had some scrimmages in the meantime and Ronald has done well,” Scott stated. “He has a lot of talent around him so he doesn’t have to get the ball all the time for us to win. He shares the ball with three other players on offense who will also go to college. If he played for another school he would probably have more yards. But here he has a lot of good players on the team.

“But he’s someone that doesn’t even mind sharing the ball.”

Lewis was also offered by Arizona, Baylor, Colorado, Ole Miss, Nebraska, TCU and Texas A&M among others. To some extent,

“I might take a look at them,” Lewis said of his other suitors, “but Arizona State is where I’m headed.”
