Mesa (Ariz.) CC corner Damarious Randall gets 11th offer of Oct…
Randall ‘excited' about ASU offer
"I'm really excited about it," Randall told Devils Digest shortly after being offered by Arizona State. "I met with Coach Graham and he offered me then. He told me that I fit their scheme and defense perfectly, because I'm a physical type of corner and that they were looking for corners like me on their defense. I was always very interested in them because they play in the Pac-12 and that's great exposure. I also like how the program is on a new path with more discipline with Coach Graham. "When I went to practice I liked how everything was moving and there is no wasted time. I like how their depth chart is friendly and sets up for some corners to come in and start right away. The biggest thing I'm looking for is depth chart. I met with Deveron Carr on Sunday. He's a senior corner and he's someone I could be replacing if I came there. I was at the Oregon game and I really liked how the secondary played because they gave up just 48 passing yards against a high powered offense." The 6-0 180-pound Damarious Randall, who reported a 40-yard dash time of 4.4 seconds, is the proverbial stat sheet filler. Through eight games for the Thunderbirds, the sophomore has recorded seven interceptions, including one returned for a score, averaged 19.7 yards per punt return including a 53-yard return for a touchdown, averaged 33.9 yards per kick return, is second in team tackles with 46, and has posted 12 passes defended, three tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries. His 53-yard punt return touchdown against Pima, along with his three interceptions in that contest earned him National Defensive Player of the Week honors. "The Arizona State coaches like my man to man coverage," Randall commented. "They also like my ball skills. I'm blessed to have coaches at Mesa that put me in the right position to make plays. I do well in press and bump and run coverage. I've been told that I have a high Football IQ. I take a lot pride in playing on special teams and the Arizona State coaches talked to me about playing on all of the special team units as a returner and a gunner. "One thing I need to work on is staying lower in my backpedal." Randall attended Pensacola (Fla.) High School and upon graduating followed in the footsteps of another Pensacola High School graduate, Patrick Norris, who played at Butler and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals. A shoulder surgery while playing at Butler forced him out of baseball, and he enrolled in a junior college in his hometown where he technically redshirted but in reality was just rehabbing his shoulder. At that time he rethought his sports career path, and decided on playing football at Mesa. "I'm not a big cold weather guy," Randall admitted. "And Florida really doesn't have good JUCO football schools. Arizona has nice weather and when I was sending out my high school film Mesa was the first one to call and show interest. So that is why I chose Mesa." His first offer came just 11 days ago, from Utah State, but his meteoric rise with the Thunderbirds naturally did nothing but attract more recruiting attention and he currently has eight Division I offers. The cornerback said that three schools are standing out the most for him. "Arizona State, is definitely one of my top schools," Randall stated. "I also like San Diego State. Florida State is on the verge of offering me and they are also one of my favorite schools." The cornerback said that a date for an official recruiting visit to ASU hasn't been set up yet, but for now he plans to keep in close contact by attending the team's practices, as he is scheduled to attend Tuesday's session. Randall, who is two for two in terms of eligibility, will graduate in May and doesn't plan to make a decision until much closer to the February 6th, 2013 National Letter of Intent Day. "Besides the depth chart of course, my relationship with the coaches is a big thing," Randall said. "I need to know if they really want me or they just don't want anyone else to have me because a lot of schools do that." Click here for Damarious Randall highlights.
