Catching up with Jalen Stevens

Jalen Stevens is one of South Carolina's top prospects. The Goose Creek (S.C.) High linebacker remains uncommitted but has a few favorites.

"I'm having an outstanding year, so a lot of schools are after me. I'm going to get the state championship first, then worry about recruiting," said Stevens.

The 6-foot-4, 221-pound linebacker is in the heat of the state playoffs with the top-ranked Goose Creek Gators.

"I am just basically focusing on the team and not letting anything get in my way," he said.

Stevens is the leader of the Gator defense, a unit that gives up an average of 10 points per game.

"I am basically trying to be the heart of the defense, be the best linebacker that has ever gone to Goose Creek High School," he said.

While Stevens is busy focusing on the playoffs, colleges are busy focusing on him. He has offers from Arizona State, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Southern Mississippi. Stevens said he spoke to Ohio State last week but has not received an offer.

"I like the schools I have gotten offers from and I feel like more are coming too," he said.

Stevens said he wants to go to a school where he can get a good degree.

Stevens said he would like to get offers from Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, Wake Forest, and Ohio State.

"You can't play football forever, depending on the situation; you could be one injury away from your career ending. So my first decision will be based on my degree, the second decision will be based on how fast I will play, and the third decision will be based on the types of relationships I have with the coaches and the team," he said.

Goose Creek is 12-0 and takes on Bluffton this Friday in the second round of the state playoffs.
