Poyer adds AP All-America honor

AND ONE MORE for good measure. Having already captured All-America honors from three of the five major AA teams, Oregon State cornerback Jordan Poyer picked up another on Tuesday in being named first team Associated Press All-America.

First-team honors on three of the five major All-America teams make for a consensus choice. Poyer had already achieved that status. The Associated Press honor on Tuesday made Poyer four-for-four.

The five major All-America teams are: Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers of America, Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Only the Football Writers of America All-America team has yet to be released. If they select Poyer, he would become a unanimous All-America choice -- rarified air indeed.

According to the OSU media guide, the last consensus All-America pick from Oregon State was center John Didion in 1968. (WR Vern Burke captured consensus All-America honors in 1963, and Terry Barker in 1962 was both a Heisman Trophy winner and consensus All-America.)

Poyer is tied for No. 2 in the nation with seven interceptions this season and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award (top cornerback) and the Bednarik Award (top defensive player).

A co-team captain, Poyer helped OSU tie for the best turnaround in college football this season with a six-game improvement from 2011 to 2012. The Beavs went from 3-9 last year to a 9-3 mark in 2012.

Poyer and his teammates conclude their season Dec. 29 when the Beavers take on the Texas Longhorns in the Valero Alamo Bowl on ESPN at 3:45 p.m. PST.
