Florence delivers Christmas present to ASU

During his official visit to ASU, Eriquel Florence came close to committing at the end of his trip. After taking a visit to Houston, the linebacker decided to wait until January to make his decision. Yet, a recent pledge by Contra Costa College teammate Demetrius Cherry and the overall strong sentiments towards the Sun Devils ultimately led to a Christmas Eve resolution by Florence.

"Seeing my teammate (Cherry) commit just pulled me close to going there," Florence said. "Talking to my Mom and other people I just knew that Arizona State has everything I'm looking for. I liked the recruiting process with them and I really had no reason not to choose them. They are doing great things there.

"I love the family atmosphere, they have a great campus, and a great coaching staff that can help me take my game to the next level. I know that they can make me successful on and off the field."

Florence was more than happy to make the call on Monday night, delivering some holiday cheer to his recruiting coach, Chris Ball.

"Coach told me that was a heck of a Christmas present," Florence recalled. "I didn't plan on announcing Christmas Eve, it just happened that way. But I'm happy I committed now."

The 6-1 218-pound Eriquel Florence collected 91 tackles and six sacks in his sophomore season for the Comets, and was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. He is being recruited as a SAM linebacker, but in a previous interview said that the Sun Devil staff liked his versatility.

"The coaches told me that I can play four different positions on their defense," Florence noted. "They like how I move, my football IQ and my awareness. I'm a go-getter that will give it my all. I could work more on my coverage and my footwork.

"The coaches really like my character and leadership."

The linebacker, who will graduate in May 2013 is a three for two player. He now hopes that teammate and offensive lineman Desmond Harrison, will complete the Trifecta of Contra Costa players in Tempe.

"I haven't talked to him but I hope it happens," Florence admitted. "We are going to be in his ear."
