Kyle Anderson had a career-high 21 points to go along with 15 rebounds as the Bruins vaulted to the top of the Pac-12 standings, avenging an 18 point to the Sun Devils when the two teams last met in Tempe back in January.
Freshman sensation, Shabazz Muhammad, who entered the contest leading all conference freshmen in scoring (18.2), poured in 21 points and seven rebounds despite suffering from pink eye earlier in the week and playing with a swollen eye. Jordan Adams added 22 points on 7-14 shooting for UCLA and six rebounds.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early nine point lead as sophomore Jon Gilling knocked down 4 three point baskets in the game's opening minutes. Gilling tied a career-high with 6 three pointers in the game, finishing with 18 points five rebounds.
Arizona State (20-9, 9-7 Pac-12) carried a two point lead into halftime but spent most of the second half playing catch-up to the Bruins as their freshman trio found their offensive rhythm.
The Sun Devils were able to overcome a five point deficit late in the game and took a brief lead when freshman Jahii Carson converted a three point play on a contested lay-up with just over a minute remaining in the second half but immediately found themselves in a hole again after UCLA's Adams sank a three point basket to put the Bruins up 72-70.
With time running down and ASU desperately in need of a defensive stop, Carson stripped Larry Drew s he drove to the basket, resulting in a Gilling outlet pass to Carson for the game-tying basket.
Unfortunately the Sun Devils ran out of gas in the extra frame.
Carson finished with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Carrick Felix notched his 12th double-double of the season 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Felix's 12 double-doubles equal the third most in a season in the program's history, tying him with Alton Lister (1980-81).
ASU had been 3-0 in overtime games entering Wednesday, and 16-0 when leading at halftime.
ASU will take on USC Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm MT.
