Hectic weekend for Humphreys

On Monday evening Connor Humphreys sounded a bit weary, and for very good reasons. Over the past four days the Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic defensive lineman visited three schools as he prepares to pare down his list of suitors. His first stop in that program tour was Arizona State, and Humphreys shared his thoughts about that Friday trip, as well as his other recent visits, to Devils Digest.

"I visited all three schools with my mom," Humphreys described. "I visited Arizona State on Friday, Arizona on Saturday and Wisconsin today (Monday). I was at Arizona State once in the spring, but because the weather was surprisingly not that nice then I wasn't able to see much of the campus. The weather was much nicer this time so we got to see more of it.

"I got to go to the dorms this time and hang out with some of the players. I also got to have lunch with the nose tackle, Jaxon Hood. All the players said that the workouts are hard so if I went there I need to be prepared for those. They also said how busy their schedules are and time management is so important."

The 6-4 250-pound Connor Humphreys posted 11.5 sacks and 80 tackles as a junior. He reported a 40-time of 4.87 seconds, and weight room marks of 330 lbs. benching, 530 lbs. squatting and 255 lbs. power clean.

During his spring visit, the Sun Devil staff indicated that they were recruiting him as a Devil backer. On his recent visit, the coaches stated that his versatility will allow him to play other roles aside from the defensive end/linebacker hybrid role.

"The coaches said that I can play three different positions on the defensive line," Humphreys commented, "so that gives you greater opportunity to play. They liked my pass rush and they said that with my frame I could get bigger and stop the run.

"They showed me on film how I could fit this defense and I really liked that. That was the part that impressed me the most, the importance that the coaches put on me in this defense and showing me how much opportunity I have to play there. That really stuck out to me."

In another network interview, Humphreys said that he wasn't able to meet Head Coach Todd Graham due to Pac-12 Media Day, but that he has a Skype video call scheduled with him later this week.

Aside from the football facet at ASU, the defensive lineman was impressed by a specific aspect of his visit.

"Their academic support really sparked my curiosity," Humphreys admitted. "Some people say that Arizona State is known to be a party school but then when you see the academics of it so you know it's not true, and I'm glad I got to see that. I really liked everything about the campus."

As mentioned, Humphreys kept busy all weekend visiting two other schools, starting with ASU's archrival on Saturday.

"They had a pretty big event there with their new facilities and I had a good time," Humphreys noted. "But when I went to Arizona State it was just me there so I got a lot of one on one time with the coaches. At Arizona I was one of 40 recruits there so I didn't get to spend any one on one time with any of the coaches, which kind of upset me.

"I had a great time in Wisconsin today. I was there for a while and everywhere I was at in the city I felt like I was still on campus. So the University of Wisconsin is the city which is neat. That really stuck out to me."

While the lineman is eyeing an August decision, he is still in the process of narrowing down his list of suitors.

"I wouldn't say that these schools I visited now were my final three," Humphreys explained, "but there were some of my favorite schools. Two of the three are going to be in my final five, but I'm not sure who the other three will be. I'm going to sit down with family and let out the all of the top five at the same time.

"I'm planning to release my final five in the next couple of weeks. I might check out an Oregon State practice before I do that because one of my teammates is probably going to commit there soon. But I'm planning to commit sometime in August."

Humphreys said that a few factors will enter his thought process as he formulates a resolution.

"Distance is one thing I have to consider," Humphreys remarked. "I visited all the big conferences so I know what each of them can offer. Playing time is obviously important, and my relationship with the coaches is important too."
