Sun Devils Bounce Back, Beat LBSU 8-6

The Arizona State Sun Devils (1-1) overcame bad weather and a four run deficit to defeat the visiting Long Beach State Dirtbags (1-1) 8-6 tying the three game series at a game apiece. Here is a full game recap.

The Devils scored first after true freshman shortstop Andrew Romine ripped a triple into the right center gap in the second inning with two men out. He later scored on a throwing error bye Dirtbag catcher Tito Cruz. The triple was also Romine's first hit as a Sun Devil.

The Dirtbags came back with in the third to tie the game after two doubles off Sun Devil starter Jason Urquidez. The Dirtbags took the lead in the fourth scoring two runs on three hits and were able to repeat their performance in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. That's when good old Mother Nature came storming through and delayed the game for over an hour. But the cold weather didn't stop the Sun Devil bats from heating up when play was resumed. The Devils scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the six to tie the game at five.

Senior right-handed pitcher Ty Marotz came in out of the bullpen to pitch a solid 2.2 innings giving up two hits and one run while striking out four Dirtbag hitters. The lone run Marotz gave up came in the top of the eighth inning giving the Dirtbags a 6-5 advantage. The Devils were able to rally in the last half of the inning scoring three runs off of three hits and two walks. Senior transfer Joey Hooft tied the game on a single to left field. True freshman J.J. Sferra drove in the game-winning run with a single that scored Hooft. The Devils added one more insurance run on a Long Beach State error. Sferra finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Hooft was ASU's top hitter on the day going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Buck also added another multi-hit game going 2-for-4.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zechry Zinicola picked up the win pitching a scoreless inning and a third. The rubber match in the three game series will be played tomorrow at Packard with a 1:00 PM start time. Expecting to take the mound for the Devils is senior left-hander Bret Bordes.
