Sun Devils in Hot Pursuit After Local JC LB
Wooten was born and raised in Phoenix, and attended Maryvale High School. He has been attending Sun Devil games at a very early age, mainly because of his cousin and ex-Sun Devil Mitchell Freedman. This season he attended the last two home games against Washington State and UCLA. "I always loved ASU," he remarked. "And I always wanted to go there."
In his sophomore year for the Gauchos, Wooten tallied 104 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles. "I'm a physical player, and I can move fast sideline to sideline," said the middle linebacker of his skills. "I always go with my first instinct. I need to focus more on my pass coverage." GCC lost to the Valley of the Sun Bowl, and finished 2006 with a 9-2 mark.
As mentioned, the linebacker has committed to West Virginia, which along with UTEP are the only two schools he officially visited. With his looming official trip to ASU, how does he now describe his commitment to West Virginia? "I'm not a solid commit and not a soft one, just somewhere in the middle," he replied. He added that he has no other planned visits after ASU.
With his strong local ties here, and his desire to don the maroon and gold, could Wooten commit on his Sun Devil visit? "It's a chance," said Wooten who's friendly with current ASU players Keegan Herring and Robert James. "Staying close to home is very important and that's what's going through my mind right now – how much I wanna play in front of friends and family. I've seen what West Virginia has and this week I'll see what ASU has. I'm looking for a school which has good academics and good team chemistry, so I know I can be a part of it."
Wooten attended Idaho State for one semester after graduating from Maryvale. Due to his redshirt season Idaho State, Wooten will have 2 to play 2 after he signs on December 20th.
