Guthrie Coming Into His Own This Spring
Guthrie, along with fellow University of Florida transfer and current Sun Devil Tranell Morant, ventured to Arizona State after the Gators' linebackers' coach Bill Miller came to the Sun Devils in a defensive coordinator capacity. "Yeah, it was rough coming all across the country from Miami to Arizona," Guthrie recalled. "The weather, the environment…everything was different. It was also hard that the coaches who brought me in here got fired. But I'm happy to be here and I'm ready to play well."
The tight end caught just four balls for 15 yards in his first playing season at ASU, and if spring is any indication, he just may eclipse those numbers in any upcoming game in 2007. "I'm blocking better and I'm in great shape right now," he said of his skills.
Last year Guthrie was buried fairly deep in his position's depth chart. While he's happy with his first-team status, the nature of the position doesn't allow him to worry about that issue. "There's a lot of shuttling back and forth, so I feel good about my situation no matter if I'm on the first or second team," he explained. "The scheme that we're running is pretty much the same like last year, so I'm feeling comfortable knowing what to do. I'm healthy now, and after sitting out a year and not playing that much I'm just ready to go out there, be on the field and show the coaches what the kid from Florida can do."
