It's Down to Three for Abbott
Abbott committed to New Mexico in September of last year and signed with them in November. He requested a release from his LOI when Lobos' Head Coach Ritchie McKay was fired, and was granted that request last month. Aside from the three aforementioned Pac-10 programs, the guard was receiving heavy consideration from Vanderbilt, Illinois and Virginia Tech. He claimed that staying close to home won't be a major factor in his decision. "It would be nice to stay here and play in front of my family," he stated, "but it would also be nice to go away and do my own thing. I definitely want to play in the Pac-10 and it's gonna be between those three schools."
Abbott paced the Thunder in scoring with 17.3 ppg and shot 63% from the field and 50% from three-point range. He was second on the team in rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. The Thunder finished 29-2 in the 2006-07 campaign and lost to 5A finalist St. Mary's in the state playoffs. "My strength is my versatility," he said of his skills. "I can shoot it from the outside; go to the hole or post up…whatever it takes. I could get better at ball handling."
The Desert Vista guard noted that the ASU coaches see him being an impact player. Ironically his AAU coach, and someone who will have a significant say in his decision, is former Sun Devil assistant coach Russ Pennell. Nonetheless, Abbott admitted that the biggest say in his future will be his mom. "She would like me to stay close to home," Abbott remarked," but she will support me wherever I go. We'll see how this all pans out…"
And the wait for three Pac-10 schools begins.
