Ainsworth Signs Free Agent Contract

Ainsworth Signs Free Agent Contract

There were two Pac-10 kickers selected in the 2007 draft, but the former ASU kicker wasn't one of them. Yet, Jesse Ainsworth was very excited when the Cleveland Browns extended him a free agent contract, which he signed on Monday.

"It's very exciting signing with the Cleveland Browns," Ainsworth told Devils Digest. "Once those two kickers, and (Colorado kicker) Mason Crosby got picked, I knew my name was gonna get called soon. I just didn't know if it was gonna be as a free agent or a draft pick. It really worked out well for me with the Browns. I'm very thankful to have this opportunity and have no complaints not being drafted."

The Browns were a team that Ainsworth worked out for twice, and were close to drafting him in the seventh round. "They called my agent right after the draft and said that they wanted me to be part of the team."

When he arrives in Cleveland this week for the team's mini-camp, Ainsworth will be battling Phil Dawson, a nine-year veteran who holds a franchise record for most consecutive field goals made 927) and is considered one of the most accurate kickers in the NFL. "He's done a good job for them," Ainsworth commented. "I'm gonna do the best I can and just compete everyday with him."

Ainsworth noted that the Lions, Ravens, and the Falcons were also teams that offered him or were at last considering offering him a free agent contract.
