The Dennis Erickson era officially kicked off Saturday night in Sun Devil Stadium before an announced crowd of over 50,000. Arizona State went on to dismantle the San Jose State Spartans in impressive fashion by a final score of 45-3. In addition to Erickson, several newcomers made their Arizona State debuts on Saturday.
True freshman wide receiver scored his first collegiate touchdown against the Spartans early in the second half. Taylor caught an 11-yard pass from
Rudy Carpenter
in the back of the end zone to help put the Sun Devils up 38-3. The Hamilton product finished with three receptions for 21 yards.
Luis Vasquez
, a junior college transfer, figures to be an important piece of the puzzle along the defensive line in determining if the Sun Devils can improve upon the pass rush this season. The junior was sidelined for short while in camp while rehabbing from an ankle sprain but found a way to heal up in time to start the season opener. Vasquez finished with two stops on the night. Transfer
Paul 'Unga
, whom Erickson likes because he offers some versatility on the DL, chipped in two tackles. Redshirt freshman
Jon Hargis
also added a stop while backing up the starters at defensive tackle.
Two other junior college transfers, linebacker
Morris Wooten
and safety
Troy Nolan
, made their first ever starts. Wooten collected a solo tackle while Nolan was in on three stops.
Jarrell Holman
, who signed with ASU in December out of Phoenix College, is competing for time at safety and came away with a solo tackle against
San Jose State
.
Omar Bolden
and
Jonathan English
, both true freshmen, got in on the action by recording their first respective tackles. Bolden will add depth at corner while English is working at defensive tackle.
Anthony Reyes
, a walk-on junior college transfer who redshirted last fall, made two tackles against the Spartans. Reserve linebacker
Garrett Judah
and
Jeff Bereuter
made their respective debuts but did not register any tackles.
With the kicking game being a mixed bag in fall camp, the 44-yard field goal by
Thomas Weber
in the first quarter was a welcome start to the season. Weber, a redshirt freshman, was also a perfect 6 for 6 on extra point attempts. Long snapper
Jason Perkins
also made his debut Saturday with a problem-free outing in assisting Weber.
