A 33-14 win for Arizona State was marred by sloppy play on Saturday night. Twelve Sun Devil penalties were tallied, including seven personal foul calls. Fortunately, the Sun Devils were able to overcome some early offensive struggles and a barrage of flags to pull away for the victory.
Junior safety
Troy Nolan
intercepted a
Cody Hawkins
pass in the second quarter and returned it for a 26-yard score. Nolan's interception was one of the biggest turning points in the game for the Sun Devils in gaining momentum. Nolan also finished with 4 tackles and 1 pass break-up.
Five tackles were recorded by middle linebacker
Morris Wooten
, including 1 forced fumble. The junior college transfer was flagged on a
Colorado
field goal attempt in the first half as he jumped on a teammate. Nonetheless, Wooten was one of several defenders that upheld a stout rush defense for the Sun Devils that limited the Buffaloes to just 32 yards on the ground. Redshirt freshman linebacker
Jeff Bereuter
also notched another tackle on Saturday night.
Luis Vasquez
made his second start at defensive end in as many games and came away with 2 stops. Fellow linemen
Alex Asi
and
Jon Hargis
got some snaps off the bench and each recorded a tackle.
Other newcomers that participated in the win included defensive tackles
Jonathan English
and
Paul 'Unga
, linebacker
Garrett Judah
, defensive end
James Brooks
, cornerbacks
Jarrell Holman
and
Omar Bolden
, and long snapper
Jason Perkins
.
Wide receiver
Kerry Taylor
, a true freshman, played against Colorado but did not come away with a reception or a score.
With all of
Arizona State
's scores coming in the form of touchdowns,
Thomas Weber
did not attempt any field goals against Colorado. However, Weber missed an extra point attempt in the first half but went on to convert 3 of his 4 attempts on the night.
