ASU Coaching Staff Vital in Elway's Pledge
During what Elway described as a "great" official recruiting visit, there was clearly one factor that stood over and above everything else he experienced during the trip. "The coaches are probably the biggest reason why I ended up committing there," he noted. "The coaches really surpassed my expectations and made me feel really comfortable on my visit. Coach Olson and Coach Erickson are the reasons I decided to commit."
Much has been said about the Sun Devil coaching ties and the possible effect they may have on Elway. ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson was an offensive coordinator under Elway's late grandfather, Jack Sr., at San Jose State. From 1979-81. Furthermore, Sun Devil Safeties Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Matt Lubick, is son of family friend and Colorado State Head Coach Sonny Lubick.
Nonetheless, ASU's latest commit claimed that this factor ultimately had little effect on his resolution. "The majority of my decision doesn't come from that at all," he said. "It was how I got along with the coaches on the visit that made me know that ASU was my top school."
Oregon was the only other program Elway was seriously considering, and at the same time that he was having strong feelings towards the maroon and gold, along came the Ducks and ‘made' his choice much easier. "The next day after my ASU visit I got a call from Oregon and they told me that they took another high school quarterback," Elway commented, "and that just added to my decision."
Elway was accompanied on his visit by his father and NFL Hall of Fame member John Elway. The former Denver Broncos star quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion gave his son the stamp of approval of the Sun Devils. "He knows all the coaches there and he thought it would be a great place for me to go to," said Elway of his father. "He loved the campus and had a good time at the game."
The Cherry Creek standout is obviously used to the notoriety because of his father and surname, but even he was somewhat blown away by the publicity his verbal commitment has received. "I didn't know that at first, but some of my friends pointed out to me that the commitment was on the ESPN ticker on Saturday," he stated. "I'm definitely used to it (the notoriety) and it didn't surprise me that much, but it's still very cool that it happened."
Thus far in his senior year, Elway has thrown for 1,677 yards (112 of 197 passing), 21 touchdowns and three interceptions. His recruitment prior to this season has been somewhat quiet, because of an average performance during his junior campaign. "I definitely worked a lot in the off-season on my reads and on my consistency," said Elway whose father serves as his position coach at Cherry Creek. "I feel that I have improved a lot on that."
Elway stated that he hasn't talked much to Andrew Sampson, the other Colorado recruit that visited Tempe the same weekend he did, but noted that "I will call him up and see what's going on with him."
