![]() Thomas Weber Tied Scrimmage at 17-17

With a mixed bag of goods on both sides of the ball, it was only fitting that the concluding Sun Devil spring scrimmage ended in 17-17 tie. Lou Groza Award winner Thomas Weber converted a 46-yard field goal for the white team to end the game. | |||

“There were some good things [and] some bad things, like any scrimmage or any spring game,” said ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson. “I thought defensively we did some awfully good things and ran around real well. I thought the hitting was very good. I thought we tackled well. We executed well at some times. I thought we ran the football well at times. It ended up like how you want to end the spring game, 17-17 tie.” The maroon team consisted of the second team offense (and first team defense) drew first blood when Shaun DeWitty scored on a 36-yard TD right up the middle. The white team struggled in the passing game, whether it was dropped ball or overthrown passes. Nonetheless, one Carpenter’s seven completions on a day was a bomb towards the corner of the end zone to Brandon Smith who beat the coverage and scored the 45-yard touchdown. Zach Richards was good on a 45-yard field gold in the waning seconds on the second quarter to give the maroon team a 10-7 lead. After a scoreless third quarter, Dimitri Nance scores from one yard out to give the white squad their first and only lead on the afternoon 14-10. Danny Sullivan lobbed a beautiful pass down the corner of the end zone to Nate Kimbrough who despite the pass interference by his defender caught the 31 yard pass to put the maroon team up 17-14. The aforementioned Weber field goal granted a rare tie in the spring game.
