San Jose RB Impressed with ASU Following Camp
Last season, Cameron Marshall collected 807 yards on 188 carries for the Warriors and tallied 11 touchdowns. He was voted First Team All-league at running back and second team All-District at linebacker. Valley Christian finished the 2007 campaign with a 7-3-1 record and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
"This year we have much more unity and experience and we're gonna go deeper into the playoffs," Marshall noted. "I think we have a good chance of winning the championship."
Marshall was clocked running a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash, and naturally listed his speed, as well as his size, as his prominent attributes. "I want to work on my foot speed," he stated. "I feel that I'm pretty quick, but I want to get quicker so I can dominate." In the weight room Marshall Benches 325 lbs., squats 480 lbs., and power cleans 275 lbs.
The running back was offered by Arizona State in March, which gave Marshall ample time before the Sun Devil camp to thoroughly assess the maroon and gold. "I like the pro-style offense they run with a single back," he said. "They let him do his thing back there making his reads and hitting the hole. I think playing in an offense like that can help me a lot."
Cal, Northwestern, and Washington State have all offered the running back in writing as well. "I have another 12 schools that have verbally offered me," said Marshall. "Hard to say which of those schools will give me a written offer." The running back indicated that the ASU camp was the only camp he attended this year, and that currently he has no concrete plans to camp at other schools. He also didn't attend any combines this year.
Marshall is one of the top track and field athletes in his conference. He runs the 100m at a 10.6, the 200m at 21.8 and registered a 47 feet mark in the triple jump. The fact that the Sun Devil Men's track team is one of the best of the nation hasn't been lost on Marshall, who admitted that it could play a fairly significant factor in his recruitment. "Track has always been one of my favorite sports. So, if I have a chance to compete in that at the next level that would be great," he said.
The running back doesn't see himself pledging to a school before his senior season, as he would like to take a few official trips during or after his last year with the Warriors. "I'm sure Arizona State will get an official visit from me," he noted, "but I don't have any dates for that visit or visits to other schools."
Marshall is passionate about his academics and said that this is one area that will factor heavily in his decision. "I want to go to a good football program, but I also want to get a good education in the process," he explained. "I obviously wanna go somewhere where I get along with the coaches and play in a system that suits me. I want to go to a program that's interested in winning. I don't want to go to a place where I just hang out and play."
According to Marshall, the ASU facilities he toured were "in top shape" and the football program received similar marks from the running back.
"I really like the football program," said Marshall. "You can tell that the guys in charge really know what they're doing. They want to win a national championship, and be one of the top schools in the nation and not just hang out with the big guys."
