Quarterback Brock Osweiler took his first snap of the game just before the end of the first quarter, which marked the earliest entry point in a contest for the true freshman this season. Osweiler was 3-4, all completions ironically to Chris McGaha, for 21 yards. The signal caller was also sacked once at which time he fumbled near the Cougars’ red zone.
Fellow true freshman, tailback Cameron Marshall rushed six times for 27 yards, and scored on a ten-yard scamper which proved to be ASU’s last points of the game, and also the first touchdown of his ASU career.
Other newcomers on offense who participated in the game were LeQuan Lewis, Andrew Sampson, Brian Matsumoto, Patrick Jamison, Kyle Johnson, and Ryan Skorupka.
Kicker Bobby Wenzig had a rough outing versus the Cougars. While the true freshman didn’t attempt a field goal, he did miss two extra points on Saturday.
On defense true freshman Vontaze Burfict started for his second consecutive game and had 3.5 tackles. Defensive end Gregory Smith recorded a sack, his inaugural one in the maroon and gold. Fellow true freshman, Will Sutton, had a sack and tackle for loss from his defensive tackle spot. JC transfer defensive end Dean DeLeone had one stop.
Other first-year defenders seeing action were Deveron Carr, Corey Adams, and Toa Tuitea.
Safety Keelan Johnson had one kick return for 13 yards.
