With a 4:30 pm tip-off Coach Herb Sendek joked earlier in the week that Friday’s game against University of San Francisco was a “businessman special.” Well, business was good this afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena as the Sun Devils set a record high for points scored in the Sendek era, crushing the Dons 104-65 and not looking ahead towards a game with Duke. In a late night affair in Tempe the maroon and gold realized fairly quickly that they won’t be able to sleepwalk their way to victory against Texas State. Thanks to reserves Trent Lockett and Ty Abbott, ASU was finally able to break away late in the first half, en route to an 84-62 victory in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Wells Fargo Arena in front of 5,457 in attendance. The 2009-10 ASU men’s basketball team came out to make a statement against the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Defeating the visitors 87-35, the maroon and gold were able to use their newcomers who gained many valuable minutes on the court, and along with the veterans showed a high degree of hustle on both ends of the floor. Albeit versus an inferior opponent, it was hard not to come away delighted from ASU’s 87-35 win over Western Illinois. This 52-point victory, in front of 8,992 in attendance at Wells Fargo Arena, is the highest one for the Sun Devils in the Herb Sendek era and the largest margin of any win since the 1996-97 season.
